Take a drive through almost any established neighborhood in Delaware, Powell, or Lewis Center and you'll spot it: driveways split corner to corner, sidewalks lifted at the joints, garage aprons flaking apart at the surface. Central Ohio is hard on concrete — and understanding why is the key to getting a slab that doesn't join them. This is also why doing concrete right the first time matters so much: the difference between a driveway that lasts 30 years and one that fails in five is almost entirely decided before the concrete is ever poured.
The real culprit: the freeze-thaw cycle
Delaware County doesn't just get cold — it swings back and forth across the freezing mark dozens of times each winter. Any water that has soaked into the concrete or the ground beneath it expands by about 9% every time it freezes, then contracts as it thaws. Repeat that cycle over and over and it works like a slow hydraulic jack, prying the concrete apart from the inside. That's what causes spalling (the flaky, pitted surface) and many of the cracks you see.
Our clay soil makes it worse
Most of Central Ohio sits on heavy clay. Clay holds water and swells when wet, then shrinks as it dries — and when it freezes, it heaves upward. Concrete poured directly on unprepared clay has nothing stable to rest on, so it moves with the ground and cracks. This is why a compacted stone base isn't optional here; it gives water somewhere to drain and gives the slab a stable, unmoving foundation.
Why some concrete survives it and some doesn't
A little hairline cracking is normal in any concrete — that's why we cut control joints, to guide where those shrinkage cracks form. The damaging cracks, the ones that ruin a driveway, almost always trace back to a few preventable shortcuts:
- No proper base. Skipping the excavation and compacted stone is the number-one cause of failure in this region.
- Poor drainage. Water that pools against or under the slab has every winter to do its damage.
- Too thin, or no reinforcement. A thin slab with no wire mesh or rebar can't bridge the ground movement below it.
- The wrong mix, or rushed curing. Air-entrained concrete has microscopic bubbles that give freezing water room to expand; skip it, or let the slab cure too fast, and the surface scales.
- No sealer. A good sealer slows water absorption — cheap insurance against freeze-thaw damage.
How to prevent it
The fix isn't complicated, but it takes discipline: excavate to the right depth, lay and compact a proper stone base, slope everything so water drains away from the house, use air-entrained concrete at the correct thickness with reinforcement, cut control joints in the right places, cure it properly, and seal it. Done that way, a Delaware-area driveway or patio shrugs off the freeze-thaw cycle for decades.

Not every crack means a tear-out. Small cracks can be cleaned, filled, and sealed; a pitted surface can often be resurfaced. But when a slab has heaved, crumbled, or is sitting on a failed base, a full replacement is usually the better long-term value than patching it every spring.
